An award winning Manchester charity, Moodswings, has been helping people recover from life’s ups and downs since 1999. Mind states that 1 in 4 people will have a mental health problem each year. Accessing tangible help can be difficult. Moodswings is situated in a converted pub at 36 New Mount Street, M4 4DE. I had the privilege to volunteer there for a short time last summer while I was in between jobs.
Moodswings runs a variety of activities, including drama classes and creative writing groups, aimed at building participants’ self confidence. The charity also offers a variety of support in the form of workshops and in some cases one-to-one support. Moodswings also provides practical support for the city’s large student population. Confidential advice is provided by way of a helpline staffed by volunteers from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. The Helpline number is: 0161 832 37 36.
Andrew Staton, the Recovery Manager at Moodswings, kindly offered a brief insight into what makes the charity.
What makes Moodswings unique?
“What makes Moodswings unique is our focus on recovery. The work we do here is focused upon enabling individuals to recover. We believe that it is possible for anyone to recover and that there are no hopeless cases. We also work with friends and family of people who have severe and enduring mood disorders, advising them on how to support their loved ones in a way that enables their recovery.”
What does the future hold for Moodswings?
“Our future plans evolve around continuing to enable as many people as possible to recover from severe and enduring Mood Disorders.”
Moodswings is holding a fundraising lunch at the Renaissance Hotel on Manchester’s Blackfriars Street on Saturday, October 29th. Acclaimed Michael Bublé tribute act, Being Bublé (Ben Gerrard) will entertain diners with songs from the Rat Pack era and no doubt Bublé hits such as ‘Haven’t Met You Yet’. Gerrard, who played Cameron Clark in the popular Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks, is perhaps better known now for his singing. All proceeds from the event will go to support the charity’s work.
